CATHERINE PETZOLD
Hunter-Wolff Gallery is pleased to introduce Colorado ceramic artist Catherine Petzold. Catherine draws inspiration for her ceramics from the whimsical, fantastical, and mythical elements of nature, often evoked by dreams and memories of captivating natural settings and life experiences. Known for their abstract and expressionistic symbology, Catherine's vessels and platters feature intricate details and narrative themes.
Her vibrant use of colors, patterns, and textures is influenced by her 40-year studio experience as a fiber artist and fashion designer, where she specialized in complex weaving, spinning, knitting, and utilizing natural dyes for surface design on her handwoven or knitted creations. Today, Catherine is focused on creating porcelain ceramics adorned with brightly colored underglazes, textures, gold lusters, and mother-of-pearl overglazes. These elements come together to form a painterly watercolor style on elegant and organic forms.
Catherine holds several degrees, including a Master's in Rehabilitation Counseling from Portland State University. Her undergraduate studies encompassed advanced sciences, ceramics, and literature, which fuel her passion for humanistic studies.
