STEVE EARNSHAW
Hunter-Wolff Gallery proudly features local artist Steve Earnshaw. Originally a biology major aiming for oceanography, Steve discovered his passion for sculpture in an elective class and switched to art, later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Wyoming.
Because life and family required a steady income, he chose to become a carpenter-contractor after graduating. He spent 25 years supporting his family in this field before transitioning to serve as a United Methodist pastor until he retired. While leading a church in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Steve visited a sculpture show in Loveland, Colorado. After nearly three decades away from sculpture, he felt a long-dormant part of his mind awaken and immediately began sculpting again.
Steve used materials he had available to experiment with different shapes and forms, eventually entering one of his creations in a local art show, where it won first place in the sculpture category. One day, while riding his bike past a dumpster, he spotted a large amount of copper wire, which he decided to salvage. As he stripped and coiled the wire for recycling, he realized it could be perfect for his sculptures. That moment marked the beginning of his focus on using copper as a primary material in his artwork.
After retiring and returning to Colorado Springs, Steve kept experimenting with copper and three-dimensional shapes. In 2024, he participated in the Marble Colorado Marble Symposium, a turning point that sparked his ongoing passion. Steve soon discovered that marble and copper are not only visually captivating but also offer limitless creative potential. He now dedicates half his time to exploring innovative concepts for copper and marble constructions and reflecting on how these materials can represent contemporary life. The rest of his time is spent carefully working through these ideas. Steve often reminds his audience that despite our highly technological era, we remain deeply connected to—and reliant on—the natural world.
