Frances Dodd
Hunter-Wolff Gallery in Colorado Springs is honored to present award-winning Artist Frances (Fran) Dodd.
Vibrant color plays a vital role in the work of Colorado artist and instructor Fran Dodd. She says, "Looking at a blank canvas or sheet of pastel paper on my easel sometimes feels as though I'm about to jump into the deep end of the pool." She explains that when she starts a new piece she is never totally aware of where the painting will take her. She allows her innate creativity to take on a life of its own while she enjoys the journey. Working in plein air or in studio from a black and white photo allows Fran to explore exciting color choices as characterized by her bold colorist style.
Fran's work is loosely described as abstract-impressionism with a brilliant stroke of representatonal spanning the genres of landscape, still life, figurative and cityscapes. Fran's compositions containing figures, trees, barns, pathways, water--are dressed in vibrant and lively color to keep the eye moving so the viewer never wants to leave the canvas. Her work makes you want to inhale its colorful energy and beauty and hold it tightly.
Fran moved to Colorado in 1983 from New York where she resided for 25 years and studied at The Art Students League in New York City. After being one of the first women artists elected to membership in the prestigious Salmagundi Club, the oldest professional artists' organization in America, she was invited to have a one artist exhibit at that facility in 1981 and 1982. Over her career she has held more than 20 solo exhibits and received dozens of honors. In 2005 she was inducted into the prestigious International Association of Pastel Societies' Masters Circle.
Throughout her career, her paintings have been juried into national and international exhibits across the U.S., including The Pastel Society of America, National Association of Women Artists, Plein Air Artists of Colorado, Degas Pastel Society, Pastel Society of the Southwest, Pastel Society of New Mexico, and International Association of Pastel Societies.
Fran's work is among important corporate-owned collections, such as Forbes Magazine; MCI Telecommunications Corp.; American West Airlines; Rio Grande Museum, Del Norte, CO; Colorado Historical Society; Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, Pueblo, CO; Parkview Hospital, Pueblo, CO; Community Banks of Southern Colorado and numerous other noted corporate and private collections around the globe.
Her work has been published in numerous magazines including the American Artist Magazine, 1998 and 1997, The Artist Magazine, 1993, Northlight Magazine 1990 and Christian Science Journal, 2000.
