T. BLAKE LOCKHART

Hunter-Wolff Gallery is pleased to represent Colorado artist and native, T. Blake Lockhart, living in Colorado Springs where he paints nearly everyday. He has been painting professionally for more than 30 years and won dozens and dozens of awards and honors throughout his career. Tom earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, where he focused on glass blowing and two-dimensional painting studies. After completing his degree, he returned to his hometown and managed his family’s retail business for 11 years before committing fully to a career as a professional painter.

To develop his artistic practice, he taught himself painting in oils, watercolors, and pastels by studying extensively and learning from renown artists. He continued to deepened his skills under the guidance of instructors such as the late Ted Goerschner, Ray Vinella, Wayne Wolfe, and Skip Whitcomb. He also sought insight from the late Irvine Shapiro (American Academy) and the late Lowell Ellsworth Smith.

Tom's work consistently explores the interplay of light and atmosphere across oil, pastel, and watercolor mediums. He aims to strike a balance between representational painting and impressionistic expression. He says, "Working outdoors has been especially important in developing [my] understanding of landscape painting, allowing me to observe and translate natural conditions more directly and effectively."

Hunter-Wolff Gallery offers collectors a beautiful collection of Tom’s contemporary landscapes, characterized by bold blocks of color that attract interest due to his intentional brushwork. His color palette suggests the essence of a scene without relying on strict realism. By experimenting with different surfaces and brushes, he refines the visual illusion of his subjects and composition. Elements such as atmosphere, temperature, and time of day remain central to his creative process. Ultimately, Tom's goal as a landscape painter is to convey sensory experiences to the viewer. He emphasizes that "it is important for his work to resonate differently with each person, while also reflecting both the beauty and the challenges involved in creating fine art."
